NSERC TO TAKE OVER REGULATORY OVERSIGHT STATE ELECTRICITY MARKET…

The Niger State Electricity Regulation Commission (NSERC) will take over the regulatory oversight of the intra-state electricity market by July 9, 2025, after completing the transition process from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

The NSERC Chairman, Engr. Mohammed Sharu, disclosed this during the First Stakeholders Engagement Summit on the New Niger Electricity Market. He noted that since the establishment of the Niger State Power Sector Law 2024, the commission has made significant strides to improve electricity supply in the state.

Engr. Sharu emphasized that both service providers and consumers will have value for their investments.

The summit was organized by the NSERC in partnership with GIZ and held at the Siyam Conference and Event Centre in Today

Earlier, the State Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, represented by his deputy, Comrade Yakubu Garba, declared that the state has taken its energy destiny into its own hands.

The deputy governor stated that the gathering signals the collective readiness of Niger State to confront energy challenges and shape the future ahead.

He maintained that Niger State was blessed not just in name as power State but in natural endowment adding that our rivers, dams holds immense potential for harnessing hydro electricity power.

He however emphasised that building a functioning electricity Market requires more than just a policy or law but partnership adding that it was time for collaboration, alignment and for collective ownership of the Sector.
