The Nigeria Defence Headquarters has confirmed that a convoy of Nigerien troops briefly crossed into Nigerian territory solely to fetch water, dismissing rumours of a hostile or unauthorized operation.
The troops according to the security sources reportedly accessed a border community where residents often share basic resources due to longstanding cross-border ties.
The military however emphasized that there was no breach of national security and that the incident posed no threat to Nigeria’s sovereignty.
Officials added that both countries maintain ongoing cooperation on border patrols and humanitarian needs, especially in areas facing water scarcity.
