FUT MINNA, FMC BIDA TEAMS UP  TO ESTABLISH MEDICAL SCHOOL TO BOOST HEALTH SERVICES 

 

The Federal University of Technology Minna (FUTMinna) and the Federal Medical Center (FMC) Bida have joined forces to establish a Faculty of Medical Sciences and Health Technology to boost health care delivery in the state and the Nation as a whole.

A delegation from the Federal Ministry of Health led by Dr. Jimoh Salawudeen, Director Hospital Services who visited FUTMinna and FMC Bida to assess infrastructure, equipment, and personnel readiness, expressed satisfaction with the progress made by both institutions, ahead of its 2025/2026 academic session for medical and health sciences programmes..

” We are here on inspection based on the directive of the Minister of Health, as requested by the Federal University of Technology, Minna, which is about to commence the school of pharmaceutical sciences and college of medical sciences and health technology, to find out the level of readiness in terms of infrastructure, equipment, and personnel.

He explained that the evidence on the ground has clearly shows that the school is ready for takeoff with the required number of professors to teach and nurture the students, as well as the hostel accommodation, for both male and female students, is also ready and equipped with the necessary facilities to make the environment conducive for learning.

” We are also impressed with the facilities, equipment, and personnel at FMC Bida, the proposed teaching hospital. The hospital has over 22 doctors, 60 consultants, 5,000-to 6,000 patients monthly, and adequate equipment,” the minister stated. .

He, however, identified some gaps in equipment and personnel at the Federal Medical Center Bida which is to provide clinical training under the arrangement urging the Institution to ensure the gaps are addressed

Speaking, VIce Chancellor FUTMinna, Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, welcomed the partnership, saying the collaboration will benefit the nation and beyond as both institutions are committed to establishing a world-class medical school.

He stated, ” This is what we have been asking for. It’s a marriage between two institutions that will benefit Nigeria and the world.”

The VC noted that the partnership is aimed to address Nigeria’s healthcare needs and produce skilled medical professionals, reducing reliance on foreign medical services.

The Medical Director FMC Bida, Dr. Abubakar Usman, assured, “We are good to go. We will address gaps in equipment and personnel within three years and provide excellent training for medical students.”

Dr. Usman, also said the hospital will soon relocate to its permanent site to enhance activities and address space constraints.

The inspection team visited facilities at FUTMinna, including a 48-bed female medical students’ hostel, male hostel, equipped human anatomy laboratory, Africa Centre of Excellence for Mycotoxin and food safety, and central store among others..
