ASSESSMENT OF ALTERNATIVE WATER SOURCES TO IMPROVE WATER SUPPLY AND IRRIGATION SERVICES

The Honorable Commissioner, Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation Services, Engr. Farouk Umaru Audi, alongside the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Alhaji Akilu Musa Kuta, the Managing Director of the Niger State Water and Sewage Corporation (NISWASEC), Engr. Gimba D. Yisa, Directors from the Ministry and NISWASEC, and the District Head of Kuta Waje Community, paid a working visit to Kunu Village to assess a potential water source from the overflow of the Zungeru Hydropower Dam.

Speaking during the visit, the Honorable Commissioner stated that the Niger State Government is not only interested in providing water but is committed to ensuring the supply of safe and potable drinking water from reliable sources. He explained that the assessment was also aimed at taking stock of available water bodies to enhance irrigation services, which informed the recent renaming of the Ministry to include irrigation services.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Alhaji Akilu Musa Kuta, noted that intensified exploration of alternative water sources is part of government efforts to address the persistent water scarcity in Minna and its environs.

In his remarks, the Managing Director of NISWASEC, Engr. Gimba D. Yisa, gave a brief explanation on the purpose of the visit, emphasizing the need for outsourcing and diversification of water sources to improve service delivery.

The District Head of the community also spoke during the visit, providing a brief historical background of the dam structure and its significance to the area.

The Niger State Water and Sewage Corporation remains committed to its mandate of providing clean, safe, and regular water supply to the people of Niger State.
