The Niger State House of Assembly Standing Committee on Works and Infrastructure, led by Chairman Hon. Arc. Abubakar Suleiman Gomna, held an interface with the Niger State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and contractors handling ongoing projects in the state.

Arc. Gomna expressed deep concerns over the alarming rate of non-compliance with safety measures on construction sites, citing frequent accidents and near-misses. He questioned the Ministry’s effectiveness in enforcing safety protocols and regulations.

Hon. Engr. Mohammed Alhaji Haruna (Bida South) and Hon. Sani Umar (Kontagora 1) highlighted the significance of workplace safety in construction projects. They expressed surprise at the apparent lack of emphasis on traffic safety and control, stressing that every construction company should have a dedicated department for workplace safety.

A motion was moved by Hon. Engr. Mohammed Haruna and seconded by Hon. Isah Etsugaie, mandating that any contractor failing to comply with safety rules would have their work stopped.

Permanent Secretary Engr. Hassan Baba Etsu assured the Committee that the Ministry would strictly enforce safety rules and regulations. Contractors would not receive payments without complying with safety protocols, prioritizing citizens’ safety.

Engr. Etsu stated that contractors have pledged to abide by safety rules and regulations, ensuring a safe working environment.

The Ministry pledged continued cooperation with the Committee for best practices in infrastructural development, supporting the New Niger Agenda.
