The Minister of Federal Capital Territory ( FCT) Nyesom Wike has once again stirred political controversy, asserting that if he contests the 2027 presidential election, Nigerians would “massively” vote for him to defeat Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate during the 2023 general election.
Wike, in a statement made available to journalist, emphasized that “Nigerians love me” and predicted overwhelming support should he throw his hat into the ring.
The longstanding rivalry between the FCT Minister, Nysome Wike, and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi remains a Major subject of discussion in the Nigeria politics
Although Wike has not explicitly used the phrasing “Nigerians will vote for me as president than voting Peter Obi” in verified public statements, the sentiment has been amplified in online discussions and headlines framing his confidence as a direct challenge to Obi’s ambitions. Social media users and political commentators have interpreted Wike’s boasts—such as “Nigerians will massively vote for me if I contest presidency”—as implying he would outperform Obi in a head-to-head contest.
It will be recalled that the FCT Minister is key ally of President Bola Tinubu, has repeatedly downplayed Obi’s chance In earlier comments from 2025, he dismissed Obi’s presidential prospects outright, stating that “Peter Obi can never be president again; his time has passed” and mocking him for “contesting for president on the internet” or social media rather than in real electoral battles.
WIKE confidence stems from his perceived delivery on projects and his influence within political circles. Supporters point to his role in major infrastructure developments and his strategic positioning in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ecosystem. Critics, however, accuse him of overconfidence, with some online reactions suggesting his claims rely more on political machinery, resources, and alliances than genuine grassroots appeal.
