The “violent clash” that ensued between an ex-convict and a police officer which led to the latter being stabbed on his forehead has created serious tension around Panseke area of Abeokuta, Ogun State.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, when the ex-convict reportedly arrived on a motorcycle and attempted to snatch an AK-47 rifle from a police officer stationed near an armoured vehicle.
It was believed that the attacker was trying to use the weapon to shoot another officer, whom he accused of having an affair with his wife and framing him, which allegedly led to his imprisonment.
When he failed to seize the rifle, the enraged ex-convict pulled a knife from his trousers and stabbed the officer he accused. Other policemen at the scene quickly intervened, overpowered the suspect, and restrained him before taking him into custody.
“He came on an Okada, tried to grab the officer’s gun, and when that failed, he pulled out a knife and stabbed him, accusing the officer of sleeping with his wife.” eyewitness declared
Police sources confirmed that the injured officer has been taken for medical treatment, while the suspect remains under investigation.
This incident comes months after security operatives arrested a 54-year-old ex-convict, Adelani Oriyomi, in Abeokuta for attempting to exhume a human skull; highlighting a worrying trend of recurring criminal behavior among ex-offenders in the state.
